The official name is Bakı Zooloji Parkı (Baku Zoological Park). It is a state institution operating under the Ministry of Culture and the executive authority of Baku.
History
The zoo began in 1928 as a small "zoobagh" (zoo garden) in Lunacharsky Park (now Nizami Park). In 1942, it was formally designated as a zoo, and it officiallyopened in 1945. Later, the zoo relocated: first to Bayilovo in 1958, then to the Narimanov district in the early 1980s. By 2001, its area had expanded to 4.25 hectares. A major reconstruction took place from 2017 to 2021, after which the zoo was reopened on October 7, 2021.Team
The director is Azer Huseynov, who has been working since 1995. The zoo employs veterinarians, ecologists, biologists, and maintenance staff. -

During the 2017–2021 renovation, new comfortable enclosures, a veterinary clinic, a lake, and expanded green areas were created. The architectural project was carried out by IDEA: the entrance was designed using COR-TEN steel, benches, trash bins, bike racks were installed, and children’s sculptures were added.

On October 7, 2021, the zoo was ceremoniously reopened after renovations. A new zoo near Baku is currently being prepared, planned to open in 2025.

Since 1995, the zoo has been a member of the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums. IDEA used EN 71-3 certified materials for the children’s elements

The zoo helps breed 22 animal species listed in Azerbaijan’s Red Book. It accepts rescued wild animals, conducts educational programs, and strives to be accessible for people with disabilities
