Beylik is the name given to small state formations that emerged in various regions of Azerbaijan during the Middle Ages. These entities were mainly engaged in agriculture and local governance. Beyliks usually encompassed one or several villages, and sometimes a township. They were headed by a bey, who protected the interests of the local population. These organizations were able to resolve their legal and economic matters independently. Beyliks had a unique role in the history of Azerbaijan.
