The National Museum of History of Azerbaijan is the largest history museum in the country. It is located in the historic mansion of oil magnate H.Z. Taghiyev, built in the Italian Renaissance style (constructed between 1895–1902).
History: Founded in June 1920, the museum opened to the public in May 1921. Since 2005, it has held the status of a national museum. After renovation, the building was reopened in 2007.
Team: The director of the museum is Naila Valikhanli. -
The collection contains more than 300,000 exhibits, divided into 10 collections (archaeology, ethnography, numismatics, etc.), including a unique library.
Separate departments: ancient and medieval history, modern history, ethnography, scientific tours, restoration laboratory, numismatics fund. -
In 2023, the museum hosted an international congress in honor of Director Naila Valikhanli, with participation of scholars from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Russia, and other countries.
Through scientific and educational activities, the museum maintains ties with universities and cultural institutions, sharing experience and promoting history. -
April 24, 2024 — Opening of a new exhibition. The ceremony featured speeches by the Minister of Culture and other prominent figures. Director Naila Valikhanli gave a detailed presentation about the exhibition, which covers the country’s history across all periods.
January 26, 2024 — Director Naila Valikhanli met with the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to discuss cultural and historical ties between the two countries.
