Fortress (6th–14th centuries) are defensive structures and were mainly built to protect cities and settlements. These fortresses were distinguished by their walls, towers, and watchtowers. They were constructed from stone, sun-dried bricks, and, rarely, river stones. The main purpose was to prevent external attacks and defend the population. In Azerbaijan, it is possible to find such historical protective structures in the Qala village of Baku. Fortresses were also used as political and economic centers.
