A reservoir is a large water storage facility constructed either on the earth’s surface or underground. In Azerbaijan, reservoirs are mainly built for agricultural purposes, drinking water supply, and hydroelectric power generation. These structures, which belong to the category of hydrological monuments, play a major role in the proper distribution of water resources. Reservoirs are artificially created by blocking the flow of natural rivers. They are also used to prevent floods and to provide water during periods of drought. The Mingachevir and Shamkir reservoirs are among the largest and most significant in Azerbaijan.
